JUST IN: FG Moves to Improve Power Supply, Set to Overhaul Electricity Distribution Companies

The Federal Government has announced the commencement of reforms to fix Nigeria’s electricity distribution problems, starting with a test overhaul of two struggling distribution companies.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, confirmed this on Tuesday.

Adelabu explained that a full review of the power distribution sector revealed problems, including poor management, weak infrastructure, and financial inefficiencies.

As part of the plan, the government recently met with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which presented a roadmap titled “Revamping of the Distribution Sector in Nigeria.”

The pilot phase of the reform is set to begin between May and August this year. One power distribution company in the North and another in the South will be the first to undergo changes.

According to Adelabu, this test project will serve as a model for improving other distribution companies across the country. The plan includes internal restructuring, help from outside experts, and closer supervision by the federal government to ensure better service for Nigerians.
