Police issue terror alert about imminent attack on churches in Kogi state

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a security alert warning of an imminent terrorist attack targeting churches in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State.

In a memo dated 20th May 2025, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Isanlu, CSP Kanwai James, disclosed that credible intelligence suggests that criminal elements are planning to launch a deadly attack on Christian worship centres in the area.

The warning was addressed to the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Yagba East chapter. The memo, referenced CB:0930/KGS/IS/Vol.4/279, is titled: “Intelligent Report on Plans by Criminal Elements to Launch an Attack on Churches in Yagba East, Kogi State.”

“Credible intelligence from concerned citizens at the disposal of the Nigeria Police reveals that criminal elements operating within Yagba East and West have concluded plans to launch a deadly attack on churches in Yagba East,” the memo reads.

The police have urged churches to activate internal security mechanisms, such as the Boys Brigade, and to suspend or limit all night services and vigils until further notice.

The memo emphasized the need for increased vigilance and security consciousness, encouraging the public to support ongoing efforts by providing actionable intelligence to security operatives.

Authorities also confirmed that a joint security task force comprising the Nigeria Police, DSS, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilantes, and hunters is working in coordination with local government officials, the traditional council, and the IPU chairman to bolster Sunday service patrols.

Repeated attempts to reach CSP Kanwai James for further clarification were unsuccessful, as his phone line was reportedly switched off.

This latest alert comes amid rising concerns over worsening security in the Okun region of Kogi West, which has witnessed a spate of kidnappings and violent crimes in recent months.

Among those reportedly held by kidnappers are a 90-year-old traditional ruler and a 76-year-old retired army major, both still in captivity.

Residents have been urged to remain calm but extremely vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest security agency.
