Tinubu’s Visit to Vatican Signals Growing Global Respect for Nigeria — TMSG

President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to the Vatican for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV has been hailed by the Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) as a significant moment for Nigeria on the global stage.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Chairman of the group, Mr. Emeka Nwankpa, said the personal invitation extended to Tinubu by the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, was a strong indication of the respect and recognition Nigeria enjoys internationally.

“This was not just a routine event,” Nwankpa said. “The fact that Pope Leo chose to personally invite President Tinubu speaks volumes about the Vatican’s regard for him and for Nigeria. It was also his first official encounter with world leaders, making the presence of our President even more meaningful.”

The event, which brought together dignitaries from around the world, saw brief personal interactions between the new Pontiff and leaders including Tinubu, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

TMSG pointed out that this is the first time in 20 years that a Nigerian President has attended a Papal inauguration in person. In 2005, when Pope Benedict XVI was inaugurated, then-President Olusegun Obasanjo did not attend, though Nigeria was represented. Similarly, during the inauguration of Pope Francis in 2013, then Senate President David Mark led the Nigerian delegation and delivered President Goodluck Jonathan’s message.

“But President Tinubu, despite being a Muslim, chose to honour the Pope’s invitation himself. That’s a strong gesture of unity, of respect, and of bridging divides,” Nwankpa said.

The group also addressed concerns some Nigerians have had over religious balance in the Tinubu administration, especially following his Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 elections.

“His attendance at the Vatican and his statements afterward reinforce what he has always said: that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength, not division,” the statement read.

According to TMSG, Tinubu’s meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria earlier this year also demonstrated his commitment to inclusivity. During that meeting, he reportedly reaffirmed his intention to “use our diversity not for adversity, but for prosperity.”

The group added that the Bishops had acknowledged the President’s role in facilitating their participation at both the funeral of Pope Francis and now the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.
