Robbery kingpin killed as police, robbers engage in shootout in Abuja

A notorious armed robbery kingpin has been shot dead during a fierce gun battle with police operatives in Maitama, Abuja, following a failed robbery attempt.

The operation, carried out by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, led to the death of the most wanted suspect, Abdulmininu Bello, also known as Babanle, and the arrest of seven other gang members.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the gang was responsible for a string of high-profile armed robberies and car thefts across the capital city.

“Acting on credible intelligence, officers intercepted the syndicate as they prepared to strike in the Maitama area. The suspects opened fire on sighting the operatives, resulting in a gun duel,” Adejobi stated.

He said the arrested suspects include Ibrahim Muhammad (22, ex-convict), Abubakar Abdullahi (22), Sarajo Yusuf (20), Sanusi Ali (51), Abubakar Sani, Isiaka Adamu (ex-convict) and Abdullahi Isah.

He said exhibits recovered from the operation include four AK-47 rifles, two locally made pistols with 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition, eleven rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, one locally made shotgun, a 2004 Toyota Camry LE and a red Boxer motorcycle.

The statement revealed that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism.

It added that the police chief urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to security agencies to combat crime effectively in the FCT.
