Federal Government Gives Update on National Grid Collapse

The Federal Government has announced that the restoration of the national electricity grid has commenced hours after it collapsed on Tuesday, marking the second such incident since Friday last week.
In an update on Tuesday, the Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO) disclosed that nationwide power restoration began at about 11:00 a.m., following the grid collapse which occurred around 10:48 a.m. the same day.
NISO explained that the disturbance originated from the Gombe Transmission Substation and quickly spread across the network, affecting the Jebba, Kainji and Ayede Transmission Substations.
According to the operator, the incident involved a voltage disturbance that led to the tripping of some transmission lines and generating units, resulting in a partial system collapse.
“Appropriate corrective actions were immediately taken to stabilise the system and restore normal operations. Restoration commenced at about 11:11 a.m. and has since been completed,” NISO stated.
The operator clarified that the incident did not amount to a total grid collapse, as only parts of the national grid were affected.
It added that the national grid has now been fully restored, with electricity supply returning to normal across the affected areas.
