Umar Damagun, Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has distanced the party from recent public comments made by Debo Ologunagba, national publicity secretary, regarding the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and the PDP’s response to a letter from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement personally signed on Monday, Damagun said Ologunagba acted without the knowledge, authorization, or approval of the National Working Committee (NWC).
He described the remarks as premature and lacking due consultation, especially since a meeting between the PDP leadership and the INEC chairman has already been scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, 2025, to address the concerns raised in INEC’s communication.
“It is shocking and unfortunate that such a sensitive matter was addressed publicly without recourse to established internal processes or the leadership of the party,” Damagun said.
He stressed that the views expressed by Ologunagba “are entirely his personal opinions and do not represent the official position of the PDP.”
The acting chairman added that this was not the first time the publicity secretary had acted unilaterally, disregarding the party’s collective decision-making structure.
“While the party remains committed to defending its internal autonomy and resisting undue interference from external forces, it must do so in a responsible and unified manner, as its strength lies in unity, discipline, and adherence to due process,” he stated.
Damagun reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to holding its 100th NEC meeting in line with constitutional provisions and democratic values.
He said the process will be conducted through collective consensus and coordination, not through personal posturing or unilateral declarations.
