A police corporal, Francis Friday has been killed by some cultists operating in Ahoada East Council in Rivers State.
The spokesperson for the police in Rivers State, Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko said the cultists killed the corporal alongside a member of a vigilante group (OSPAC), Ngozi Ipah.
The police officer and Ipah were killed beside the Ahoada East Council Secretariat in Rivers State.
The cultists were said to be members of the Iceland cult group.
It was gathered that the attackers stormed the OSPAC office and opened fire on the security operatives.
Describing the attack as a brutal one, Iringe-Koko said the incident occurred at about 8 pm on Monday.
She added that the cultists were led by two men, Umegbewe Kingsley aka Gutam and one Opaka.
“During the assault, OSPAC operative Ngozi Ipah was shot. While escaping, the assailants also gunned down a police officer, Corporal Francis Friday, who was on special duty at the Secretariat with the Special Intervention Squad (SIS)”, Iringe-Koko said.
The police added that patrol teams were alerted and arrived at the scene of the incidents.
However, the attackers had already fled the scene by the time they arrived.
The victims were immediately rushed to the Ahoada General Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds but were pronounced dead on arrival.
While their bodies have since been deposited in the morgue, the police commissioner in the state Olugbenga A. Adepoju has directed the Divisional Police Officer to ensure the perpetrators of the attack are all arrested.
