Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2023 elections, Dumebi Kachikwu, has alleged that the newly formed opposition coalition is a calculated scheme designed to produce former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Kachikwu made the remarks during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.
According to him, a faction of the ADC, now led by former Senate President David Mark, has hijacked the party to serve a northern political agenda. He said the coalition, under the guise of rescuing Nigeria, was a vehicle for Atiku’s bid for the presidency.
“The coalition was engineered and designed to produce Atiku Abubakar as the standard flag bearer,” Kachikwu said. “If not, I challenge them to make a statement that the ADC 2027 presidential ticket is for Southerners.”
According to him, the leaders behind the movement made their intentions clear in a private meeting with him, repeatedly emphasising their desire to “take their power back.”
His claims come just a day after opposition politicians, including Atiku, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and others, formally launched the coalition at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.
The coalition adopted the ADC as its political platform, following the resignation of the party’s entire leadership, including National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, to pave the way for the new alliance. David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola were announced as interim National Chairman and Secretary respectively.
