Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed, widely known as Aisha Binani, has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Binani was the governorship candidate of the APC in Adamawa during the 2023 general election.
She contested against incumbent Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Fintiri emerged victorious with 430,861 votes, while Binani came a close second with 398,738 votes.
Her defection follows the defection of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the PDP. Atiku is expected to join Binani in the newly adopted opposition coalition platform. She is also believed to now enjoy the backing of Atiku Abubakar, who has reportedly withdrawn his previous support for Governor Fintiri.
Binani is no stranger to politics in Adamawa. She served as Senator for Adamawa Central from 2019 to 2023 and previously represented Yola North/Yola South/Girei Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. Her husband, Professor Ahmed Modibbo, is a prominent figure from Yola and is touted as one of the richest individuals in the state.
