Strike: Health Minister in closed-door meeting with nurses, midwives

Following the ongoing strike across the health sector, the Minister of Health, Muhammad Ali Pate is currently meeting with nurses and midwives.

Pate’s meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) and representatives of the Ministry of Labour is aimed at finding a lasting solution to the grievances and demands raised by the health workers.

Recall that nurses and midwives under NANNM embarked on an industrial action on July 29, over what they described government’s failure to respond to their ultimatum.

The association issued an ultimatum to the government on July 14, urging it to address the issues raised by nurses and midwives.

With the strike action expected to last until August 5, 2025, the association raised concerns over the welfare and poor working conditions experienced by nurses.

The chairman of the union, Morakinyo Rilwan, alleged that the government had failed to avail itself for meaningful engagement with the association.

“As far as we are concerned, there has been no communication from the government to this moment. That is why we are saying the strike is going on, and nothing is stopping it. Even if the government calls today or tomorrow, it won’t stop the strike. They had enough time,” Rilwan said.

It is however, expected that with the minister on board the negotiation process, the nurses and midwives association will call off the strike in due time.
