President Bola Tinubu has directed the expedited rollout of free healthcare for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, disclosed the development in a statement on Wednesday.
Tinubu said the initiative is a critical component of social protection and dignity in retirement.
He also ordered the immediate implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee to protect vulnerable pensioners under the CPS.
The directives followed a briefing from Omolola Oloworaran, director general of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), at the state house.
The president further mandated PenCom to resolve the long-standing police pension issue, saying officers who serve and protect the nation must retire with dignity and peace of mind.
The PenCom DG also briefed Tinubu on efforts to preserve the value of pension assets amid inflation and macroeconomic pressures.
She outlined plans to introduce foreign currency contributions, which would allow Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the pension system.
The president expressed strong support for the proposed reforms, restating his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and social protection for all Nigerians.
