Amnesty International Nigeria has strongly condemned the “outrageous assault” of female members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by armed men allegedly linked to Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, in Anambra State.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, the human rights watchdog described the July 23, 2025, incident as a gross violation of human rights.
A viral video from the attack showed the corps members being stripped naked, severely beaten, threatened with sexual violence, and subjected to other degrading treatment.,
Amnesty said the vigilante group must be “transparently held to account” and called for a thorough, impartial investigation into the incident.
The organisation noted that it has been tracking human rights violations committed by vigilante groups across Nigeria, many of which, it said, operate with impunity and without regard for due process.
“In some cases, such groups have been accused of extrajudicial killings, torture, unlawful detention, and enforced disappearances,” it said.
Amnesty also urged the Anambra State government to issue clear directives ensuring that the Agunechemba Vigilante Group operates strictly within the bounds of the law.
