The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 14 political associations, including the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), have scaled the first hurdle in the process of becoming fully registered political parties.
The electoral body made the disclosure in a statement issued on Thursday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.
INEC disclosed that it received 171 applications from groups seeking registration. It further revealed that after initial screening, only 14 met the requirements under Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and the Commission’s Guidelines for Political Parties.
The Commission noted that the qualified associations would now move to the next stage, which involves physical verification of their claims before a final decision on their registrability is taken.
Interim chairmen and secretaries of the pre-qualified associations have been invited to a briefing scheduled for Wednesday, September 17, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
