Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has returned to Port Harcourt following the suspension of the six-month emergency rule imposed by President Bola Tinubu.
Fubara arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport around 11:50 a.m. on Friday to a rousing welcome from supporters who had gathered at the VIP wing in anticipation of his return.
The governor’s arrival comes more than 24 hours after President Tinubu formally lifted emergency rule in the state on Wednesday night.
On Thursday, the Rivers State House of Assembly resumed sitting under Speaker Martins Amaewhule, but Fubara did not make an appearance at the Government House, despite a large crowd that had converged there to receive him.
Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, had been out of office since March 18, when Tinubu declared a state of emergency and swore in retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator of the state. Ibas handed over on Wednesday evening.
