Two police officers have been killed in an ambush by gunmen in Isanlu community, Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi state.
The officers, attached to MOPOL 70, were attacked on Sunday while on duty.
Sources said the assailants, suspected to be bandits, opened fire on the policemen along Ilafin road, killing two on the spot, while others escaped.
The attackers reportedly stripped the officers of their uniforms and carted away their weapons.
The chairman of Yagba East Local Government Area, Joshua Monday, described the incident as “a brutal killing of gallant officers” and “an assault on peace and security”.
He said the attack was “a calculated attempt by enemies of progress to destabilise our society and instil fear in our people”.
“Their courage and loyalty to the nation will not be forgotten but will remain enshrined in the history of our community,” Monday said.
On behalf of the people of Yagba East, he extended condolences to the families of the victims, the police force, the Kogi command and the wider security community.
The council chairman called on security agencies to investigate the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“These two officers of MOPOL 70 died in active service; they are martyrs of peace and guardians of justice,” he said.
