The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s push for Nigeria to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
The party argued that such ambition is “absurd” at a time when Nigerians are facing daily attacks from bandits and terrorists.
In a statement signed on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC faulted the administration for prioritising global recognition while failing to guarantee safety at home.
“It is shocking that the Tinubu administration is asking for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council while bandits are slaughtering Nigerians and taking over parts of the country,” the ADC said.
“How can a government that cannot provide peace or security at home expect to be taken seriously at the global table where security is discussed?”
The party pointed to recent killings in Zamfara and Katsina, where gunmen stormed communities, murdered villagers, and kidnapped dozens.
“In only two months, over 140 Nigerians have been murdered in Zamfara and Katsina alone. Amnesty International reported that more than 10,000 lives have been lost since May 2025 to attacks by armed groups,” the statement added.
According to the ADC, farmers in Zamfara have even been forced to pay over N56 million to armed groups before being allowed access to their farmlands, a development the party described as proof of a “parallel authority” operating within Nigeria.
“This is no longer just about insecurity; it is about Nigeria’s territorial integrity being eroded under President Bola Tinubu,” the party said.
The ADC also accused the President of neglecting key security responsibilities, citing his absence at the commissioning of 874 new officers at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna.
Instead, he attended the reopening of the National Arts Theater in Lagos, which the party labelled a “misplaced priority.”
“With all these signals, this administration is plagued by misplaced priorities. The President has become a passive spectator, watching from a distance while villages burn and prayers end in gunfire,” the statement read.
The party urged Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara, stressing that the killings and abductions cannot continue unchecked.
