The death of former President Muhammadu Buhari has opened a fresh battle for his political bloc ahead of the 2027 general election.
President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are at the centre of the scramble, with both men seeking to inherit Buhari’s loyalists in the north.
Sources say the All Progressives Congress (APC) has stepped up efforts to consolidate Buhari’s political base, while the opposition is wooing his former allies to weaken the ruling party’s hold on the region.
Atiku recently hosted former chairmen of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Buhari’s former political party, in a series of meetings aimed at forming an alliance.
Meanwhile, former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, ex-Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola, former Osun Governor, are reportedly working with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge Tinubu in 2027.
Earlier in the year, many of Buhari’s close associates in the CPC bloc had complained of being sidelined in the affairs of the ruling party.
They equally expressed frustration about the governance style of President Tinubu, policies, and joined the opposition politicians’ move to form a coalition to unseat him.
For them, such a move was necessary to salvage the count, and especially for the sake of their political future.
