Ohanaeze Ndigbo has alleged that the Minister of Works, David Umahi is currently facing attacks and persecution because he is from the South-Eastern part of Nigeria majorly inhabited by the Igbo people.
In a statement issued on Monday by Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Chinyereze Ohia, the Deputy President General and National Spokesperson respectively, Ohanaeze said there is a buildup of conspiracy targeted at the Minister.
Addressing activities and utterance by some of the groups and individuals perceived to be working against Umahi, the socio-political group said these forces are seeking to undermine democratic principles and obstruct good governance within the nation.
Sounding a note of warning to the Minister’s detractors, the duo said the Ohanaeze Ndigbo will continue to pledge its unwavering support for one of its own.
“We, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, unequivocally state that the appointment of Senator David Nweze Umahi as Minister of Works by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu represents a significant milestone in our history.
“His ascension to this critical position, breaking a 74-year political jinx and drought, marks him as the first Igbo to hold the portfolio of Minister of Works since 1951. This alone is a testament to his capabilities and the President’s recognition of Igbo merit,” Ohanaeze said.
The group further alleged efforts to undermine the minister vowing that Ndigbo will not only protect Umahi but defend him from any surreptitious conspiracies and clandestine political machinations originating from any source whatsoever.
Continuing, Messers Isiguzoro and Ohia said that the objective of the Minister’s attackers is clear and that includes to undermine the effectiveness of President Tinubu’s administration by targeting some of the most high-performing members of his cabinet.
Also stating that Ohanaeze Ndigbo will support President Tinubu “until 2031, the duo urged the Minister to remain resolute and undistracted by the antics and noise around him.
“We implore him to continue fulfilling his constitutional mandate, delivering high-quality road infrastructure across Nigeria, and contributing to the betterment of our nation,” Ohanaeze Ndigbo said.
