A historic newspaper article from 1978 has re-emerged online, confirming the name President Bola Ahmed Tinubu used while studying at Chicago State University in the United States.

The publication listed Tinubu among a group of Black students who were part of a diversity initiative in the American racetrack business.

The document, dated June 18, 1978, introduced twelve students who were selected for an initiative aimed at exposing minorities to the racetrack business — a sector that was then heavily dominated by white Americans.

Tinubu’s name appeared clearly in the report, placing him at Chicago State University during that period.

In the article, Tinubu was recognized as a Nigerian student who expressed interest in using American business strategies to drive economic growth back home.

The President was quoted in the publication expressing his intention to use the knowledge gained from the programme to support economic growth and job creation in Nigeria and Africa.

BOLA TINUBU, a student [of Chicago State University] from Nigeria, said he expects to take his findings back to African businessmen as a plan for his country to make more money and create jobs for the unemployed,” the report read.

The historical newspaper page was recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Nigerian journalist Tolu Ogunlesi, who described it as a fascinating discovery from the archives.

Ogunlesi noted that the publication served as a verifiable record of Tinubu’s educational identity and participation in a notable 1970s diversity initiative in the United States.
His post has since drawn widespread attention, reigniting conversations around Tinubu’s academic history.

Many people view the discovery as an additional piece of evidence confirming his link to Chicago State University, which has been a subject of public debate for years.

Recall that controversies surrounding Tinubu’s academic credentials became a major public issue ahead of the 2023 elections, with court cases and political rivals questioning the authenticity of certain documents linked to his Chicago State University education.

However, the reappearance of a 1978 newspaper report has now added a fresh dimension to the conversation.

  1. What happened before, during and after the election. Why now, I mean of what use of this your political publication. After your government finish this country in all areas of your life you can think of.

  2. Whether he attended the university or not, but the basic thing is for him to do the work required. Is he doing it or not?

  3. How shameless can someone be? I followed Tinubu’s case in 1998 to 1999 and again in 2022 to 2023.

In 1998 Tinubu presented two certificates. The first was from the University of Chicago where he claimed to have obtained a first degree. The second was from Chicago state University for Masters degree. The University of Chicago wrote that they had juggled the name Bola Ahmed Tinubu in every way and none was found in their records. They Concluded that the certificate bandied by Tinubu was not issued by them.

Tinubu responded by saying that he only “audited a course” at the University of Chicago. But this raised two issues. One, auditing a course is like taking an elective course. Can you take an elective or any course at all in an institution without registering as their student? And two, if in deed Tinubu didn’t do a degree at University of Chicago, where did he obtain the certificate which qualified him for a Masters degree and Chicsgo state University?

Many of the people shouting now were either too young in 1998 or were not reading newspapers. In fact a country of 200, 000 000 was not selling 50,000 copies of newspaper per day. Many were not reading and were/are ignorant of those events. That may be why neophyte are talking as if the case is new.

  4. It has never been in doubt that one Tinubu attended Chicago state University but the issue lies in the fact that that person was a female gender. The year and date were not also the same, the age also.

  5. Hoping this 1978 news paper clip is not A1 generated. Besides, of what use is it to us since the man is already in power. Soon, we may hear that the secondary school he claimed to have attended, but which was not yet in existence then, was indeed in existence through another weird or obnoxious newspaper clip or findings. May God help us in this country; a country of anything goes, and the more you look, the less you see.

    1. You people won’t stop chasing the shadows. The man you would not stop to hate is progressing. By God’s special grace he’s your President. Why can’t you free your heart of this bondage before ending like Hamaan in the Bible

  6. Because is Nnamdi kanu, if I should ask how long did it take federal government of Nigeria to prepare their case against him, that they are now giving him Six days to prepare his defence, it will not work, he is a man of divine grace by God grace he will surely come out victoriously..

  7. Where are the documents supporting this claims that he travelled to US at what age? The US said he was an assets to their intel. The embassy in Nigeria and US should show details of travel documents at time for vetting.

  8. The clothes Tinubu wore are of few years aback. Why this AI thing. The publisher of picture wants this man to lose the coming election.
