Justice Osho Adebiyi of a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced 19-year-old school teacher Abdullahi Abbass to life imprisonment for raping a nine-year-old pupil in Kwali Area Council of the FCT.

In a press statement on Saturday, signed by the National Press Officer of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Vincent Adekoye, the agency described the judgment as another major breakthrough in the fight against sexual violence in Nigeria.

The report stated that Abbass, who worked at one of the leading schools in Kwali, was the victim’s class teacher.

On 19 March 2025, after school hours, he sent another pupil to call the victim from home. He then took the child to the street where he lived and sexually assaulted him.

Despite threats from Abbass, the victim reported the incident to his mother, leading to the teacher’s arrest by the police and subsequent referral of the case to NAPTIP.

The offence is punishable under Section 2 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015. Abbass was arraigned on two counts involving rape and sexual abuse and was convicted on 29 October 2025.
