Former US Vice President Dick Cheney has passed away at the age of 84, according to a statement released by his family and reported on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the Cheney family, he passed away “on the evening of Nov. 3, of complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease,” surrounded by loved ones.
The family described him as “a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing.”
Cheney served as the 46th Vice President of the United States under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009.
He was a central figure in US politics during a pivotal era, which included the September 11 attacks and the ensuing War on Terror.
