The Kebbi State Government has provided an updated account of the students abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, confirming that two of the kidnapped schoolgirls have escaped from their captors.

Speaking to Channels Television in Zuru on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Halima Bande, clarified that 26 students were abducted during the attack.

While two girls managed to regain their freedom, 24 schoolgirls are still being held.

She identified the escapees as Salma and Hauwa’u Liman, assuring that both girls are safe.

“Only two have escaped so far,” Bande emphasised.

“This tragedy has thrown everyone into trauma. We don’t know where the girls are sleeping, what they are eating, or the condition they are being kept in,” she added.

The Commissioner urged the public to desist from spreading unverified information about the incident, noting that several inaccurate reports have been circulating.

“I implore journalists and media houses to rely solely on authentic information regarding this incident,” she warned.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday when armed assailants invaded the school, killed the vice principal, and abducted over 20 students. Security personnel, vigilantes, and local hunters are currently conducting search operations in the forests to locate the missing schoolgirls.
