Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has asked northern leaders to confront the deepening crises in education and agriculture across the region.

Atiku spoke on Friday at the 25th anniversary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) held in Kaduna, noting that the north must prioritise rebuilding its human capital if it intends to remain competitive in the country.

He warned that the region could “fall irretrievably behind” if leaders fail to act collectively.

He added that improving education, expanding agricultural productivity and addressing insecurity were critical to reversing the region’s decline.

The former vice-president urged northern elders to work together and promote policies that strengthen unity and development.

Atiku paid tribute to past ACF leaders, saying: “May their soul rest in peace, and may God shower his mercies on them.”

He said anniversaries provide opportunities not only for celebration but also for reflection on the purpose and performance of organisations.

He said the North must confront long-standing issues of diversity management, adding that northern adversaries often exploit fears and fabricate stories to sow division.

Atiku said leaders must ensure equity, fairness and safety for all groups, warning that those attempting to divide the North for selfish ends threaten regional stability.

He added that the North must address questions about demography, education, food security and job creation as population figures rise.
