Fifty pupils abducted from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, have escaped from captivity and reunited with their families, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) confirmed on Sunday.
The pupils were taken during a midnight attack on the school last week. According to CAN, they regained their freedom between Friday and Saturday but did not immediately return to the school premises.
Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, Niger State CAN Chairman and Catholic Bishop of the Kontagora Diocese, said the school administration verified the children’s escape after contacting their parents.
He explained that the pupils, frightened and disoriented after fleeing through the night, instinctively headed to their homes rather than back to the school compound. School officials later visited the families to confirm each child’s safe return.
