President Bola Tinubu on Sunday evening met with top military and security chiefs at the State House, Abuja, to discuss security issues.
In a post on his verified X handle, @OfficialABAT, the President said decisive measures are being taken to stabilise areas affected by rising security threats. He also assured Nigerians that anyone undermining the nation’s territorial integrity will face the full force of the law.
Tinubu wrote, “I am currently in an extended security meeting with heads of our defence and intelligence agencies, including the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the DSS.
“We are reviewing the latest reports and taking decisive actions to stabilise affected areas and protect our citizens. I am receiving continuous briefings and have directed our security services to move with speed, precision, and absolute resolve.
“As President, I remain fully committed to the security of all Nigerians. Those who threaten the peace and security of our nation will face the full weight of the law. Nigeria will prevail.”
Earlier on Sunday, the President also directed the withdrawal of police officers currently assigned to provide security for Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the directive will allow the police to refocus on their primary duties. Henceforth, VIPs requiring security escorts will have to seek armed protection from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The directive was issued during the security meeting with police chiefs, military leaders, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services.
The statement noted that many communities, especially in remote areas, have an inadequate police presence, making it difficult to ensure effective protection and response.
In light of current security challenges, President Tinubu aims to increase police presence nationwide. He has already approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers, while the federal government is collaborating with state governments to upgrade police training facilities across the country.
Sunday’s meeting was attended by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director-General of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
