Fresh details have emerged on how security operatives quietly engaged bandits to secure the freedom of worshippers abducted in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the Department of State Services (DSS) and the military opened communication channels with the armed group shortly after the attack.
He said the security agencies moved fast and made direct contact with the kidnappers.
According to him, the negotiators insisted on the immediate release of all victims.
Onanuga explained that the bandits eventually complied because they feared the consequences of ignoring government orders.
He revealed that the rescue operation required careful planning.
Security officials monitored the bandits’ movements but avoided any reckless confrontation that could endanger the captives.
“After the incident happened, the DSS and the military were involved in the rescue efforts. They got in contact with the bandits to release those people unharmed, and finally on Sunday they were able to get them out,” he said.
He added that security agencies rely on advanced methods to track bandit groups.
However, they often hold back when civilians are being used as human shields.
Onanuga noted that the priority was to secure the safe return of the abducted church members.
He said the government achieved that target and would allow security forces to determine the next steps.
All 38 victims were eventually freed without casualties.
Authorities have not provided further details on the operation or whether the bandits are still being pursued.
The Eruku incident has sparked fresh fears in Kwara South and nearby communities, as residents are demanding improved surveillance and stronger intelligence across rural areas.
