A late-night collision along the Gombe–Yola highway has claimed the lives of three people, leaving six others injured.
The accident, which happened around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday near the Kashere junction in Akko Local Government Area, involved two vehicles travelling in opposite directions.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday in Gombe, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Samson Kaura, said the impact of the crash was severe and led to a head-on collision.
According to him, preliminary findings showed that wrongful overtaking and excessive speed were major factors that triggered the fatal crash.
“The cars involved in this incident were on speed and attempted wrongful overtaking while driving at night. That combination is dangerous,” Kaura said.
Six survivors were rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where they are currently receiving treatment for various injuries, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Specialist Hospital, Gombe.
Kaura warned motorists to prioritise safety, especially when travelling at night, noting that reduced visibility and misjudgment often increase the risk of crashes.
“Driving at night is a choice, but if it is not necessary, avoid it. At night, a vehicle that appears distant may actually be closer than you think. We must drive with extra caution and maintain reasonable speed,” he added.
He appealed to road users to adopt safer driving habits and avoid practices that endanger their lives and those of others.
