Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has paid a personal visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

The visit, which took place on Sunday, has sparked fresh discussions about a possible political solution to Kanu’s prolonged detention.

Governor Otti arrived at the facility with a small delegation that included Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; the Abia State Attorney-General, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

Officials from the Sokoto State Government were also present during the meeting.

According to information released after the visit, Otti assured Kanu that efforts to secure his release were still very much alive.

He explained that engagements he initiated long before now had reached an advanced stage and were being pursued with renewed intensity.

The governor expressed confidence that the matter would eventually be resolved “administratively,” suggesting that discussions outside the courtroom may produce a breakthrough.

During the interaction, Otti also told Kanu that the Sultan of Sokoto had shown support for a peaceful outcome.

In a light-hearted moment, he joked that the Sultan now considers Kanu his “subject” and could even turban him, a remark that reportedly drew laughter from the IPOB leader.

Kanu, who appeared in high spirits throughout the meeting, thanked the governor for making the long trip to Sokoto.

He praised the developmental progress in Abia State and encouraged Otti to continue prioritising good governance. He also offered prayers for the governor and his team.

The visit has generated fresh expectations among supporters who believe political dialogue may finally chart a path toward Kanu’s release after years of legal battles, transfers, and heightened tension across parts of the Southeast.
