Nigeria was thrown into surprise on Thursday after Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, announced that he is stepping away from international football.

The declaration marks the end of a remarkable ten-year journey with the national team, a period in which he became one of the most consistent leaders in the squad.

The defender made the announcement through an emotional message on his Instagram page, where he reflected on his years with the team and what the green-white-green jersey has meant to him.

“Honoured. Grateful. Forever a Super Eagle. Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life,” he wrote.

He added that even though he is hanging up his boots at international level, his loyalty to the team remains unbroken.

“The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter.”

His message came shortly after a prominent football transfer journalist, Fabrizio Romano revealed publicly that the Nigeria captain had taken the decision to retire.

The statement confirmed earlier speculation about the future of the experienced defender.
