The Jigawa chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the suspension of Alhaji Sule Lamido, former governor of the state, from the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).

On Friday, the PDP BoT announced Lamido’s suspension over allegations of anti-party activities and inflammatory statements during recent internal crises.

The decision has sparked controversy within the party in Jigawa, with concerns that it could deepen divisions ahead of future elections.

Reacting to the development, the Jigawa PDP described the suspension as unjust and counterproductive.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Dutse and signed by Babandi Gumel, state chairman of the party, the chapter said the decision had generated widespread concern and debate.

Gumel said the suspension, reportedly linked to claims that Lamido attended meetings capable of undermining party unity, was an affront to justice, internal democracy and reconciliation efforts within the PDP.

“The pursuit of one’s legal and constitutional rights within the party cannot be construed as an act of disunity,” he said.

Gumel said Lamido sought judicial redress after he was denied the opportunity to obtain a nomination form to contest the PDP national chairmanship.

He said the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled in Lamido’s favour, restraining the party from proceeding with its national convention until his right to contest was determined.

Gumel described the suspension as premature and prejudicial, adding that it amounted to disrespect for the judicial process.

He said Lamido is a founding member of the PDP who has remained loyal to the party and never defected to another platform.

“Punishing such loyalty sends a chilling message to all dedicated members,” Gumel said.

The Jigawa PDP chairman said the suspension undermines party unity, noting that the party’s strength lies in inclusion rather than exclusion.

He added that the PDP constitution does not permit the suspension of a life member such as Lamido.

“The party demands that the BoT immediately and unconditionally withdraw the suspension imposed on Lamido.

“We urge the BoT to retrace its steps, align its actions with its recent calls for reconciliation, and apologise to this elder statesman,” he said.

Gumel said the Jigawa PDP remains committed to a united and democratic party that respects the rule of law and the dignity of its members.
