Human rights activist and lawyer, Barr. Deji Adeyanju, has defended collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in counterterrorism operations following the recent airstrike targeting ISIS-linked elements.
Adeyanju made his thoughts known in a post on X on Friday while reacting to criticisms of the operation by Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.
His words: “If the Donald Trump air strike against Nigerian ISIS didn’t kill any terrorist, why is Gumi crying? Should he not be happy that all his colleagues are still alive? Why the tears?” he added.
Adeyanju called for deeper cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in confronting terrorism.
“We need more collaborative efforts between the US and Nigeria against these barbaric terrorists terrorizing our nation,” he said.
The comments come amid public debate over recent joint counterterrorism actions involving Nigeria and the United States.
Government officials have said the operations were aimed at degrading terrorist networks and preventing further attacks.
Critics, however, have raised concerns over sovereignty, civilian safety, and the level of Nigeria’s operational control.
