Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe representing Abia South has officially resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and declared for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Abaribe announced his defection today, ending weeks of speculation over his political future amid growing tensions within APGA.
The senator said his decision was informed by what he described as irreconcilable differences with the leadership and direction of APGA.
He said the ADC offered a more credible platform aligned with his political ideals and commitment to democratic accountability.
Abaribe said: “After wide consultations, I have taken the decision to formally resign from APGA and align with the African Democratic Congress, which provides a clearer vision for good governance and national renewal.”
The lawmaker said Nigeria needs a strong and principled opposition capable of offering citizens a viable alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.
Abaribe’s exit follows months of strained relations with APGA over internal party democracy, candidate selection processes and alleged marginalisation of key stakeholders.
The senator had openly criticised the party’s leadership for what he described as unilateral decisions and failure to build consensus.
In recent months, Abaribe was also at the centre of disputes over APGA’s political strategy in Abia, with sources saying he resisted moves that would weaken the party’s independence at the national level.
He was said to be dissatisfied with APGA’s handling of alliances and its posture toward the ruling party, which he reportedly viewed as compromising the party’s founding principles.
Abaribe, a former deputy governor of Abia state and long-time APGA chieftain, had been one of the party’s most prominent national figures.
