Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says eight people have been confirmed dead following the fire outbreak that destroyed the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building in Lagos on December 24, 2025.

The Lagos governor disclosed this on Friday after visiting the site of the incident, adding that five of the deceased victims have been identified, while three remain unidentified.

His words: “My deepest sympathies remain with the families who lost loved ones and with everyone whose homes and businesses were affected. I know that no words can fully ease the pain they are going through.”

Sanwo-Olu said an information centre has been established at the site to support affected persons and provide updates.

His words: “Anyone requiring assistance or information can speak with officers from LASEMA, NEMA, LASBCA, and the other responding agencies.

“The entire area remains unsafe, and no business or unauthorised activity should be taking place there. The market is closed, and only first responders are permitted on the site.”

He added that emergency teams were still working carefully through the debris to ensure no one remains trapped.

“Emergency teams continue to work carefully through the rubble, particularly at the rear of the building, to ensure no one remains trapped,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu described the incident as a reminder of the dangers associated with unsafe practices around markets.

“This tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by certain practices around the market,” he said.

“The unsafe use of generators and the construction of shops around transformers significantly increased the risks in this area.”

He said the GNI building would be demolished after a full structural review, alongside some surrounding structures.

“Following a full structural review, the GNI building will be demolished using the safest possible methods, and some surrounding buildings must also be removed,” he said.

“While these are difficult decisions, we must prioritise the safety of lives above all else.”

The governor said the state government would oversee the recovery process and ensure support for affected families.

“My heart is with every family affected, and I remain committed to overseeing the recovery process and ensuring we do right by our people,” he said.
