The Nigerian Army has recorded a major operational success in the North-East.
Military troops have arrested a man identified as Sheriff Umar.
He is believed to be the central figure behind recent suicide bombing plots in the region.
Military authorities say the arrest marks a significant blow to terror activities around Maiduguri and nearby areas.
The suspect is accused of coordinating attacks and managing suicide bombers used for deadly missions.
The breakthrough followed a carefully planned security operation carried out in the Kalmari area of Maiduguri. The exercise took place on December 31, 2025.
Soldiers conducted a cordon-and-search operation based on intelligence reports. Fourteen suspects were arrested during the sweep.
After several rounds of screening and questioning, investigators uncovered a clear command structure within the terror group. Sheriff Umar emerged as the key coordinator. He is also known by the alias “Yusuf”.
A senior military officer involved in the operation confirmed that a detained suspect, Ibrahim Muhammad, directly pointed to Sheriff Umar as the leader of the network. Investigators say the confession was detailed and consistent with other findings.
According to the military, Sheriff Umar was in charge of recruiting suicide bombers. He reportedly handled their preparation and deployment.
He also coordinated logistics, including the supply of explosive materials and movement instructions.
Further investigation linked him to the suicide attack at Gamboru Market Mosque on December 24, 2025. During that incident, an accomplice identified as Adamu detonated an explosive device and died on the spot.
Security sources also disclosed that Sheriff Umar played a role in a failed suicide bombing attempt in Damaturu. He was said to have personally handed over explosive components to the bomber while still in Maiduguri.
The investigation widened after authorities uncovered links within the suspect’s household. His wife, Yagana Modu, was found to have knowledge of some activities. His stepdaughter, Amina, reportedly confirmed that she had previously seen one of the suspected bombers in their home.
Military officials say this discovery exposed how terror groups hide within families and local communities. It also revealed how domestic spaces are sometimes used to shield criminal activities.
All suspects arrested during the operation remain in custody. Security agencies say investigations are ongoing. The aim is to dismantle the entire network, trace other collaborators, and recover any remaining explosive materials.
The military has again stressed the importance of cooperation from the public. Terror groups, according to officials, depend heavily on secrecy and fear within communities to survive.
Residents have been urged to stay alert and report suspicious movements or individuals. Authorities insist that public support remains critical to preventing attacks and restoring lasting peace in the North-East.
