“Politicians Are the Problem of Nigeria” — Peter Obi Urges Nigerians to Pray for Them

Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to pray for politicians, saying the political class is responsible for most of the country’s problems.
The former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate made the statement during a thanksgiving service held in Oyo State on Sunday.
The event took place at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan, as part of activities marking the state’s 50th anniversary.
Speaking to the congregation, Obi said Nigeria’s crisis is not caused by ordinary citizens but by those in leadership positions. He urged Nigerians to remember political leaders in their prayers and ask God to change their hearts.
“I want to make a request of Nigerians. Please do remember us politicians in your prayers. We are the problem of Nigeria. No other person.”
Obi explained that Nigeria is richly endowed with human and natural resources but continues to struggle because of poor governance and misuse of public funds.
According to him, the nation’s economic hardship and social challenges are the result of leadership failure, not lack of wealth.
He added that the solution lies in sincerity and accountability among public office holders.
“Nigeria is not a poor country. It is poorly governed. Remember us in your prayers that God should touch our hearts to use public money for public good. That is what is required. If they use it, Nigeria will be good.”
The thanksgiving service was one of several events organised to celebrate Oyo State’s 50 years of creation. Religious leaders, government officials, and invited guests attended the programme.
The anniversary celebration began on January 26 and will run until February 3. It is expected to end with a gala night and dinner at the Government House Banquet Hall in Agodi, Ibadan. During the event, all 17 former governors of Oyo State will be honoured for their roles in the state’s development.
