PDP NEC Fixes Dates for National Convention Following Court Victory

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed March 28 and 29, 2026, for its National Convention in Abuja following its recent court victory on the party’s leadership crisis.

The decision was taken during the party’s 105th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

Party leaders agreed that the convention would provide a fresh opportunity to elect new national officers and stabilise the party’s internal structure.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the NEC said its resolutions were based on wide consultations about the condition of the party, the current political climate, recent court judgments, and preparations for key internal activities.

The committee also confirmed all resolutions earlier taken at the emergency NEC meeting held on December 7, 2025. It stressed that those decisions remain valid and legally binding.

NEC members praised the judiciary for upholding the rule of law and described the court ruling as a major boost to the party’s stability.

The party welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which affirmed the legality of the PDP’s leadership arrangement and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the National Caretaker Committee.

With the court matter resolved, the NEC approved March 28 and 29, 2026, as the official dates for the National Convention where members of the National Working Committee and other statutory organs of the party will be elected.

The committee also extended the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee, including state and zonal caretaker committees, until the convention and the conduct of congresses at different levels are completed.

To ensure smooth preparations, the NEC directed the National Caretaker Committee to immediately set up convention sub-committees. These committees are expected to handle logistics, security, accreditation, and consultations with party stakeholders nationwide.

Party leaders called on members to maintain discipline and unity ahead of the convention. They warned against actions that could deepen divisions or weaken the party’s internal cohesion.

The NEC said the PDP remains focused on rebuilding itself into a strong, organised, and competitive opposition party capable of contesting future elections successfully. It added that the convention would strengthen internal democracy and restore confidence among party supporters.

Members of the PDP at home and abroad were urged to remain loyal, law-abiding, and committed to the ideals of the party as preparations for the convention begin.

“The NEC further approved and confirmed March 28 and 29, 2026, as the dates for the PDP National Convention, to be held in Abuja, for the purpose of electing members of the National Working Committee and other statutory organs of the party.”
