APC Reveals Next Move After Losing Osun Governorship Election
Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has begun reviewing the outcome of the 2026 governorship election after its candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, lost the contest.
The party said it is studying the results recorded across the 332 wards in the state before deciding on its next step.
The APC made this known in a statement signed by its Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, following the declaration of the election result.
According to the party, the announcement of the result does not necessarily bring the electoral process to an end, particularly where a contestant believes there are grounds to challenge the outcome.
The APC said it would examine the results and consult its legal team before deciding whether to approach the courts.
It pointed out that Nigerian electoral laws provide avenues for parties and candidates who are dissatisfied with an election to seek redress.
The party specifically mentioned the election petition tribunal, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court as the available legal channels.
The APC said it would rely on the advice of its lawyers before taking any formal action.
“The electoral process does not end with the announcement of results,” the party said, stressing that the law provides opportunities for aggrieved parties to seek redress.
Before the poll, the APC leadership had repeatedly expressed confidence in Oyebamiji’s chances.
The party’s National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, had declared that nothing would prevent the APC from taking over the state.
Speaking in Abuja during the inauguration of the party’s campaign council in July, Yilwatda said the APC had the political structure and manpower required to win elections across the country.
“If there is any political party in Nigeria that has human resources in abundance, it is the APC. If there is any political party that has the most experienced politicians in Nigeria, it is the APC,” he said.
He also said the party’s campaign structure had been carefully assembled to deliver victory in Osun.
“Nothing will stop us from taking over the Government House on August 15, 2026,” Yilwatda declared at the time.
The Osun APC said the review would cover results from the 332 wards in the state. The party also called for calm among its supporters.
It urged members not to engage in confrontations with supporters of the ruling party or respond to provocative comments.
The APC asked its members and supporters to continue with their businesses while the leadership considers its options.
It assured them that it would not abandon them despite the outcome of the election.
The party further appealed to the Nigeria Police Force to protect its members and supporters.
The APC alleged that some of its members were being molested by opposition supporters and called on the police to intervene.
It said the protection of citizens and political actors remained important after the election.
The party maintained that its commitment to the rule of law had not changed.
It also insisted that its supporters should remain steadfast while the leadership reviews the situation.
Oyebamiji had also campaigned on promises to improve key sectors of the state, including agriculture, infrastructure, education, healthcare and workers’ welfare.
During a campaign rally in Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency on July 21, he said agriculture would be central to his economic plans if elected.
“I am optimistic that, with your support, I will emerge victorious in the August 15, 2026 governorship election,” Oyebamiji said at the rally.
He also promised to develop rural communities through mechanised farming and better road infrastructure.
Moreover, on April, during the inauguration of its campaign committees in Osun, APC leaders said the party was determined to remove Adeleke from office.
Senator Francis Fadahunsi said the APC would work to ensure that the incumbent governor did not return to office.
