US Lawmaker Breaks Silence on Plan to Divide Nigeria amid Rising Insecurity

A United States lawmaker has dismissed claims that Washington is considering a plan to divide Nigeria, following growing concerns fueled by insecurity and separatist agitations across the country.
United States Senator, Riley Moore, addressed the issue after reports suggested that discussions around Nigeria’s division were raised during his recent visit to the country.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the senator made it clear on Saturday that such claims are false and do not reflect the nature of his engagements while in Nigeria.
Moore confirmed that he was recently in Nigeria, where he held several high-level meetings with government officials and other key stakeholders. According to him, none of the meetings involved talks about breaking up the country.
He stressed that at no point did the issue of Nigeria’s division feature in any meaningful discussion. In his words, the idea of “dividing the country has not come up in any serious way”.
The US lawmaker warned that promoting separatist agendas would worsen Nigeria’s fragile security situation. He noted that such actions would have grave consequences, particularly for vulnerable communities.
Moore explained that “efforts to embolden separatists hurt Christians in Nigeria, especially in the North and Middle Belt.” He added that instability would only strengthen terrorist groups operating within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.
He further stated that “a destabilized Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent.” According to him, Nigeria’s unity remains critical to regional stability in West Africa and the wider African continent.
Reaffirming his position, the senator said he remains committed to humanitarian and security efforts aimed at protecting lives in Nigeria.
He noted, “I remain committed to working to save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ and for that matter, all Nigerians suffering from the instability wrought by terrorists throughout Nigeria.”
Moore also highlighted recent progress in bilateral relations between both countries. He disclosed that “the US and Nigeria have just entered into a security cooperation agreement,” describing it as a major step toward addressing insecurity and violent extremism.
He concluded that the agreement would help both nations deepen collaboration, improve intelligence sharing, and strengthen efforts to combat terrorism. According to him, this partnership reflects a shared commitment to Nigeria’s stability and sovereignty.
