The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, says the Nigerian Army has no business in deploying soldiers to quell civilian unrest or protests.
Sultan, at a press briefing organized in Abuja on Wednesday, also condemned the shooting and killing of #EndSARS Protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza on Tuesday night, by security forces.
The monarch noted that the incident has further buttressed the problems of human rights abuse and the extra-judicial killing of innocent civilians, which the youths are fighting against.
He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately investigate the incident, also calling on the Nigerian Army to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act and bring them to book.
Abubakar also called on the President to address Nigerians home and abroad and condemn the ugly situation in the strongest terms.
Also, the Sultan asked the federal government to immediately address the demands of the protesting youths in order to quell the current wave of protests around the country.
He, however, urged the protesters to ease down on the protests and give the government time to respond to their demands.
The Sultan and the President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Ayokunle, were represented by the Executive Secretary of Nigeria Interreligious Council, Fr. Prof. Cornelius Omonokhua, at the event.
