VIDEO: Sowore Speaks From Hospital, Reveals Those Behind Attack
Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has spoken from a hospital after he was allegedly attacked by suspected political thugs in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Sowore, in a video shared on social media on Friday, accused individuals linked to the Ekiti State Government House of carrying out the attack.
He also accused operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) of providing support to the attackers.
The activist made the allegations in a post on his X account.
He wrote, “This is the level of infamy to which Nigeria has been subjected! Those who brutally attacked us in Ado-Ekiti today came from the Government House @ekitistategov. They are well known, and they were provided with tracking and operational support by the @OfficialDSSNG.”
Sowore further alleged that DSS operatives had been monitoring and harassing him and members of his team since they arrived in Ekiti State on Thursday.
According to him, the security operatives had followed their movements and even threatened the manager of a restaurant where they had earlier eaten.
“Since our arrival yesterday, DSS operatives have been trailing and harassing us. They even threatened the manager of the first place where we ate, warning him never to allow us to use his premises again,” he stated.
Sowore said the incident occurred shortly after he concluded an interview at MIDAS FM 90.5 in Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the attackers descended on him and his team shortly after the radio appearance, claiming that the DSS provided assistance during the operation.
“Today, shortly after I completed an interview at MIDAS FM 90.5 in Ado-Ekiti, the thugs descended on us in a violent attack, allegedly with the assistance of the DSS,” he added.
The development comes after reports emerged on Friday that the activist had been attacked inside a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti, with an earlier post on his Facebook page raising concerns that he had been abducted.
“Thugs just attacked us inside a restaurant in Ado Ekiti,” Sowore had written in his initial reaction.
Another update subsequently stated: “Armed thugs kidnap Sowore. His current location is unknown!”
The reports generated concerns about his whereabouts, as the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and abduction were initially unclear.
The attack comes a day after Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, challenged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure at least 80 per cent of registered voters’ support for President Bola Tinubu in the January 2027 presidential election.
Oyebanji made the appeal on Thursday at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti during the inauguration of the state chapter of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement.
The event also witnessed the presentation of 25 campaign vehicles to support Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
The movement, convened by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, is seeking to strengthen support for the president through grassroots mobilisation and direct engagement with voters across the country.
Speaking at the event, Oyebanji urged APC leaders and members to intensify their mobilisation efforts, reach undecided voters and discourage voter apathy ahead of the 2027 election.
He also called on campaigners to identify eligible voters with Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) who did not participate in previous elections and encourage them to vote.
The governor said Ekiti State should appreciate the support it had received from the Tinubu administration by delivering a strong electoral result for the president.
He maintained that federal government support had contributed to his administration’s development efforts and expressed confidence that the state would perform well in the forthcoming election.
“I have always said that in our 30 years as a state, there has been no President who has been as fair and supportive to Ekiti as President Tinubu,” Oyebanji said.
He added, “We are extremely grateful, and we assure you that your investment in Ekiti State will not be in vain. I assure you that Ekiti will perform well and record an outstanding result in January.”
