Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Jonah Melaye has weighed in on the Federal Government’s suspension of Twitter’s activities in Nigeria.
On Friday evening, the Nigerian government announced that Twitter has been suspended from operating in Nigeria. The government’s directive is coming a day after the platform deleted a tweet and video from the President’s official handle.
President Buhari was in hot water on Wednesday after threatening ‘genocidal’ violence on people of the South-East over the rising spate of insecurity in the region.
The tweet generated a massive outcry with several Nigerians reporting the President’s tweet for removal. The tweet and a video of the president making the threats were removed by the social media giant on Thursday.
The Nigerian government wasted no time in expressing its disagreement with the decision through the nation’s minister of information, Lai Mohammed. The Kwara state-born politician accused Twitter of ‘double standards’ and questioned their role in Nigeria’s affairs.
Reacting to the suspension, Melaye, a known opposition figure, tweeted;
“Naija Govt sha. Using Twitter platform to announce Twitter suspension. Na im Baba Fela dey call babanla nonsense. SDM”
