Shettima Leads Tribute to Honour Fallen Heroes on Armed Forces Remembrance Day

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, is attending the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) at the Cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier in Eagle Square, Abuja.

He is representing President Bola Tinubu, who is currently in the United Arab Emirates attending Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2026.

The AFCRD, organised annually by the Ministry of Defence, honours the nation’s fallen heroes, those who gave their lives in service during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping missions, and various internal security operations, including the ongoing fight against terrorism.

Beyond paying tribute to the fallen, the event also celebrates living veterans and provides a platform to rally financial and moral support for them and the families of those who sacrificed their lives.

While the AFCRD is observed worldwide, Nigeria’s commemoration reflects its own history. As a former member of the Commonwealth, Nigeria once observed Remembrance Day on November 11, in line with other member states, to honour those who died in the World Wars, marking the date of the Armistice that ended the First World War in 1918.

Later, January 15 was chosen to commemorate the end of the Nigerian Civil War, aligning the observance with national history.

The 2026 AFCRD carries special significance, coming amid notable successes by the Armed Forces in the Northeast and other regions.

The occasion recognises the bravery, professionalism, and sacrifices of officers and soldiers who confront security challenges to ensure peace for Nigerian citizens.

The Federal Government expressed enduring gratitude to these courageous Nigerians and encouraged citizens, organisations, and the private sector to continue supporting service personnel, especially the injured and the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, both during the remembrance period and beyond.
