JUST IN: Shettima Departs to Ethiopia to Represent Tinubu at 2026 AU Summit

Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 2026 African Union Summit.
The summit will bring together African leaders to discuss key development challenges facing the continent. The central theme of the meeting is “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
The gathering will focus on water security and sanitation as major pillars for Africa’s long-term growth. Leaders are expected to review progress on development goals and agree on fresh strategies to improve access to clean water and public health systems across member states.
During his stay in Addis Ababa, Shettima will attend the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government. He will also take part in the 30th General Assembly scheduled for February 14 and 15.
The Vice President is billed to engage in several high-level meetings on the sidelines of the summit. These meetings will involve political leaders and business stakeholders from different African countries. Discussions are expected to center on regional cooperation, economic growth, and stronger diplomatic ties for Nigeria.
Officials say the visit will also provide Nigeria with the opportunity to reinforce its leadership role within the African Union and deepen partnerships in areas such as infrastructure, trade, and sustainable development.
Shettima is travelling with some cabinet ministers and top government officials who will support Nigeria’s participation in the summit and related activities.
He is expected to return to the country after completing his official engagements in Ethiopia.
