Otti Mourns 15 Umuahia Traders Killed in Auto Crash

Abia State has been thrown into mourning following a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of 15 Umuahia-based traders returning from a traditional wedding ceremony in Enugu State.
Governor Alex Otti has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, describing the loss as painful, devastating, and heartbreaking for the entire state. The victims were said to have travelled to Enugu to attend a wedding ceremony before meeting their untimely death while journeying back to Umuahia.
In a Government Special Announcement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Governor lamented the magnitude of the tragedy, noting that the accident occurred outside Abia State’s immediate jurisdiction, thereby limiting the possibility of rendering prompt emergency intervention from the state.
Governor Otti stated that upon receiving verified reports about the crash, he immediately directed the Honourable Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection to urgently reach out to the families of the deceased as well as survivors of the accident.
According to the statement, the directive is aimed at ensuring that affected families receive the necessary government support during this period of grief and hardship. The Governor emphasized that no family should be left alone to bear the weight of such a tragic loss without compassionate assistance from the state.
“This is a deeply painful moment for us as a government and as a people. Fifteen precious lives lost in a single accident is a devastating blow. Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of the deceased,” the statement conveyed.
Beyond mourning the victims, Governor Otti also used the solemn moment to reiterate the importance of road safety compliance. He called on drivers to strictly observe traffic regulations, avoid over-speeding, and desist from dangerous practices such as driving against traffic.
He stressed that many of the fatal accidents recorded across the country are preventable, urging motorists to prioritize safety over haste.
On behalf of the government and people of Abia State, Governor Otti extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
As the state comes to terms with yet another road tragedy, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for collective responsibility on Nigerian highways.
