New electricity line nearing completion, Nigeria and three other countries soon to be interconnected

The transmission line constructed under the West Africa Power Pool North Core Project will soon connect Nigeria to the Republics of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Benin.

The Federal Government released the announcement on Friday through the 52nd WAPP Executive Board Meeting in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The project is nearing completion as it is set to finish by 2023.

“The WAPP North Core Project that seeks to interconnect Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Benin is in the implementation phase with the procurement process underway,” said Sule Abdulaziz, the Acting Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria and the chairman of the Executive Board of WAPP.

This North Core Project is part of WAPP’s efforts to integrate the power systems of West African countries and maximize effective utilization of the ECOWAS regional electricity by delivering priority projects.

It aims to interconnect all fourteen countries in the mainland of ECOWAS. Abdulaziz expects the power system and trading opportunities for the market to increase and become more flexible through the project.

The Secretary-General of WAPP, Mr. Siengui Appolinaire KI, added, “Despite the challenges, we must at all costs continue our journey towards the ultimate goal of our institution, which is the implementation of a competitive regional electricity market.”

Previously, the construction of the 330kV Volta (Ghana)-Lome ‘C’ (Togo)-Sakété (Benin) interconnection line has been completed and will soon be operated. WAPP Cote d’Ivoire–Sierra Leone–Guinea will be the next part of the project to be inaugurated.
