Anambra Assembly Moves To Recall Suspended Lawmaker

After months of political battle, the Anambra State House of Assembly has commenced proceedings to review and potentially recall Hon. Bernard Udemezue, the suspended member representing Ayamelum Constituency.

Politics Nigeria reports that the development was announced during plenary on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, when Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze directed the House Committee on Rules, Ethics and Privileges to urgently re-examine the lawmaker’s suspension.

Udemezue was initially suspended for three months in August 2025 following a report by the Committee on Ethics and Privileges. The House cited “unparliamentary conduct” linked to social media posts in which he alleged marginalisation of Ayamelum Constituency in the allocation of constituency allowances, describing the content as “damaging.”

The suspension took effect after the Assembly adopted the committee’s findings on August 28, 2025.

In November 2025, the suspension was extended by an additional three months, running from November 26, 2025, to February 26, 2026, due to Udemezue’s alleged failure to comply with the House’s directives, including continued posting of materials deemed critical of the Assembly.

During Tuesday’s session, Speaker Udeze instructed the committee, chaired by Majority Leader Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, to assess Udemezue’s level of compliance with prior House resolutions before submitting recommendations.

“The suspension remains subject to review by the Committee, which is expected to assess the level of compliance by Hon. Udemezue with the resolutions of the House before making its recommendations,” Udeze stated.

The plenary was subsequently adjourned to Wednesday, February 19, 2026, when the committee is expected to report back.
