BREAKING: Court remands ex-senior civil servant Chima Igwe over certificate fraud

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Friday remanded a one-time Director-General (DG) of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), Chima Igwe. Igwe was accused of certificate forgery.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Justice Sherifat Solebo gave the order, directing that Igwe should be incarcerated.

It would be recalled that in June, a group petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), alleging that Igwe had used a fake doctoral certificate to work with the institute for 18 years.

The ICPC investigation indicted him, still, Igwe remained a key staff member of the institute.

In a petition dated June 7, 2021, and addressed to the ICPC, the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) tackled the accused. HEDA recalled that Igwe’s degree was subsequently investigated by ICPC and the findings dated January 24, 2020, was sent to the Ministry of Science and Technology.

On September 28, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the ICPC to commence the prosecution of Igwe. According to Buhari, Igwe is not qualified for the position of DG.

The letter also advised against interference in the running the affairs of the FIIRO.
