Gangster Style Assault on Popular Will — Utomi Slams Tinubu, NASS Over Electoral Act

Political economist Pat Utomi has criticised the recent amendment to the Electoral Act approved by the National Assembly of Nigeria and promptly signed into law by Bola Tinubu.

In a post on X on Friday, he said the decision by the Senate and the Executive should not be overlooked, warning it could pose serious risks to Nigeria’s democracy.

He added that the development amounts to treason and shows a lack of character and shame among those responsible.

Utomi also warned that the situation could trigger instability in Lagos and Abuja, likening the potential outcome to the crisis in Khartoum.

Utomi wrote, “This gangster style assault on the popular will by the Senate and Executive must not be brushed off. It is treason.

“Beyond a show of lack of character and a sense of shame it sets up conditions that may bring Lagos and Abuja to what Khartoum, Sudan is. So stop them we must.”

According to earlier reports by Politics Nigeria, the National Assembly recently passed the Electoral Act amendment, which was later assented to by President Tinubu.

The amendment has continued to spark mixed reactions from political actors and civil society organisations.
