A former governor of Abia State and current Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu says he is working behind the scenes to ensure Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) regains freedom.
Kanu, who was brought back to the country under controversial circumstances by the federal government in June last year, is facing terrorism and treasonable felony charges. He is being held up in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Kalu disclosed his efforts to get Kanu released, on Friday evening during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, monitored by POLITICS NIGERIA.
When asked for comments on the agitation for a sovereign nation of Biafra and Kanu’s detention, Sen. Kalu vehemently refused to discuss the issue.
“I was a party to solving the problem. Now, it’s in the court, I am doing a background job to that,” he said tersely.
This newspaper recalls that Kalu had in November 2021 paid a visit to Kanu.
Kalu said he had a discussion with the diaspora-based IPOB leader whom he met in good health and care.
The Senator said he will continue to counsel Kanu just as he had always done in the past, whether he listens or not.
Kanu’s trial is expected to continue on February 16.
