“Winning election is not about buying corn by roadside” – Wike chides politicians

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has slammed politicians who go about buying corn and other items from petty traders during election campaigns.

Speaking days after the FCT council polls while commissioning 54 units of construction equipment in Edo State, Wike said winning elections is not by buying and eating corn by the roadside.

According to the minister, elections are won on the bedrock of visible achievements by political parties and those in authority.

He said, “Winning an election is not by buying corn on the road. Winning of election is to show the people what you have done.”

Commending the procurement of the construction equipment made by the Edo State government for distribution to the state’s 18 local government councils, the minister said the initiative was a bold step towards deepening grassroots economic development.

He also commended the Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo for prioritising the development in the rural areas across the state.

He said the effort showcased by the governor is practical and the basis for economic empowerment and sustainable growth within the grassroots.

Wike also noted that the governor’s initiative is in alignment with the vision of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda which aims to strengthen public confidence in governance.

He also highlighted the need for politicians to focus on visible projects and infrastructural development rather than populist gestures.
